Hot Oil Treatment For Dry Hair!

Natirèl Beauties, is your hair a little dry? Well, here is a great hot oil treatment that I always do when my hair is feeling dry:

      Ingredients:
      • 1/4 to 1/2 cup of  Olive Oil (Extra Virgin)

      What To Do:
      • Heat oil in the microwave for approximately 1-2 minutes.
      • Carefully pour the oil into a spray bottle.
      • Apply to the ends and dry parts of your hair (avoid getting oil onto your scalp).
      • Cover your head with a shower cap or warm towel for at least 30 minutes.
      • Rinse, then shampoo and condition as usual.

**NOTE** For extra conditioning, some naturals advise sleeping with the oil on your hair and washing it out the next morning.

          National Afro Day!

           Hey Natirèl Beauties!

A Long Hair Care Forum member (BlkOnyx488), came up with this idea and said "Whenever I wear my afro BIG I feel so empowered and strong. So what if we took over July 4th and made it National Afro day? And we go to all the cookouts, firework display, and family events with our fros big and beautiful!"  Well, I thought it would be great if I also help spread the word.  So, let's wear our big hair tomorrow for 4th of July in celebration of National Afro Day!

Do you want to help spread the word?  If so, I came across these wonderful logos someone designed for this event.  By sharing it on your website, blog, facebook, twitter or even just the old fashion way "the word of mouth"; your helping :)

**NOTE**  If you print out the logos, you can make your own iron on transfer shirt.

Happy National Afro Day, Natirèl Beauties!!

          07.02.10
After 14 years of using relaxers, last year I decided to cut off my relaxer and go natural.  I honestly believe this was one of the best decisions I've made in my life!  Since then, I found out so many negative things about chemically treated hair.  I'm still learning new things about how to treat natural hair and loving every bit of it!

One of the most important things to know about is protective styling, like the two strand twist is a simple and easy style to do.  It's great because the ends are not exposed and the twist can last for about 1-2 weeks.

Learn How To Protect Your Hair During The Summer Time!

Yayy!! Summer is almost here and we already know that we have to protect our hair during the winter and spring, but we MUST remember that we also have to do the same thing for the summer. Here are a few helpful tips that I came across that are great in keeping your hair looking moisturized and healthy during the summertime.

          1.  Moisturize:
          • Use a moisturizer with UV protection.
          • Use a leave-in conditioner to hair daily. Apply it in the morning and the evening or as needed depending on your level of dryness.
          • Do a deep conditioning treatments more often.

          2. Reduce the use of heating tools:
          • You want to prevent as much heat damage as possible during the summertime so give the flat iron and blow dryer a break.  REMEMBER: If you do decide to use any heating tools, make sure you always use a heat protectant.

          3. When swimming at the pool or beach:
          • Chlorine can be very damaging to both natural and chemically treated hair. If you’re hitting the pool a lot, it can can lead to breakage and splits ends. To protect your hair apply a leave-in conditioner before jumping in the pool.
          • Salt water can make color treated hair look dull or even change color if hair is exposed to it a lot. You should wash your hair with a color treated shampoo and conditioner after swimming in the ocean.
          4. Protective styles:
          • Wear braids, cornrows, and twists. Wearing these types of styles reduces your need to use heating tools.
          • If you know your hair is going to be exposed to the sun for a long period of time, wear a hat or scarf to protect your hair.  Also, you can even use an umbrella to protect your hair from the sun.

I hope these tips keeps your hair looking great this summer :)

Essential Oils - For Your Hair!

Essential Oil is a liquid that’s been extracted from flowers, leaves and other elements of a plant.  There are many different types of  essential oils that are great for your hair and scalp.  Every essential oils has a different use, here are some of my favorites:

          • Peppermint Essential Oil - Helps the hair to receive proper nourishment and to grow correctly.  It makes the scalp tingle and this is what stimulates the blood flow to the hair, it also promotes hair growth.
          • Lavender Essential Oil - A scalp treatment for itchiness.  It's great for soothing your scalp and calming your hair.
          • Tea Tree Essential Oil - Great treatment for oily hair, dry scalp and dandruff.
          • Rosemary Essential Oil - Works great for dry hair, itchy scalp and dandruff - DO NOT USE IF PREGNANT!!
          • Basil Essential Oil - Promotes hair growth!
          • Rose Essential Oil - Helps soothes scalp and has a great smell.

Essential oils cannot be used directly to your hair without being mixed with carrier oils first. Here are a list of carrier oils:

          • Jojoba Oil - If you want to add softness, shine and moisture to your hair, you should use jojoba oil. It's a great moisturizer and healing oil for all hair types.  It works especially well on dry, brittle or frizzy hair.
          • Olive Oil - This oil can be combined with other essential oils. Apply the oil to towel dry hair and leave it in for at least 30mins. Olive oil is especially good for dry hair that is suffering from indoor heating and the sun.
          • Coconut Oil - Adds shine to dry and damaged hair. When combined with other essential oils, coconut oil makes an excellent dandruff treatment.

                  Add Your Favorite Essential Oils

            • Scalp Massage - Add 5 to 10 drops of  your favorite Essential Oil to 1/4 cup of Jojoba Oil for a wonderful scalp massage.
            • Scented Hair - If you add 2 drops of your favorite Essential Oil like Lavender, Rosemary or Rose Oil to the bristles of your brush, the oil will leave your hair with a nice aroma.
            • Shampoo/Conditioner - Add 2 to 3 drops of your favorite Essential Oil to 1 tablespoon of shampoo/conditioner.

Please leave a comment and let me know how you added your favorite Essential Oil....
